Heroes of September 11 Get $650 Million Compensation
Rescue and recovery workers who were exposed to toxic wastes such as smoke and dusts from the aftermath of the September 11 attacks will be granted a collective amount of up to 650 million dollars.
A huge number of these heroes, which include firefighters, police officers, construction experts and emergency workers, will be splitting the compensation depending on the degree of their injuries.
The settlement between the lawyers of the more than 10,000 claimants and the federal finance insurer of New York City is expected to end lawsuits and legal battles. The agreement was announced Thursday night, March 11, by WTC Captive Insurance Company.
Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein of the US District Court and the workers still needed to approve the deal. If 100% of the plaintiffs approve, a total of $657.5 million dollars will be granted. If only 95% approves, a total of only $575 million will be released.
The settlement was “a fair and reasonable resolution to a complex set of circumstances,” Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
