Slovenia: We’ll Give Americans a Good Fight
Fresh from their first-ever World Cup win, Slovenia are looking to shock the favorites in Group C, namely England and the United States. The surprise leader of their group after a 1-0 victory against Algeria, Slovenia believe they are capable of pulling off an upset or two in the coming days.
Team captain Robert Koren said notching their first ever three points in the World Cup has made Slovenia confident going into their match with the US team on Friday, June 18. “We are really confident after these three points today and we will give them a good game,” Koren said of the Americans, who were able to hold powerhouse England to a 1-1 draw in the first Group C match.
At least a draw against the US will put Slovenia, who lost all their matches when they first qualified for the World Cup in 2002, in a good position to move into the knockout phase. The top two teams in each group after the single round group matches will advance to the next level.
After the US, Slovenia will wrap up their elimination round assignments against England, but Koren, who scored the lone goal against Algeria, said they are not intimidated by their favored competitors.
