Snoopy Named Top Dog for Pop Culture

Snoopy has won an online contest crowning the Peanuts character the top dog in popular culture.snoopy

The American Kennel Club made the announcement Tuesday, December 22. The online poll, voted by 76,000 people, was part of its 125th anniversary.

Snoopy defeated college sports mascot Reveille of Texas A&M University, Scooby Doo and Eddie, the pet dog in the TV show Frasier. Notably absent on the top ten list are Lassie, Rin Tin Tin, Benjie and Toto from The Wizard of Oz. It seems the method of voting affected the results as senior people probably were not able to vote for Lassie and Rin Tin Tin or that there were so many votes coming from Texas placing the university mascot as second.

Snoopy was created by Charles Schulz and has been in print for five decades already. Peanuts appears in 2,600 newspapers in 21 languages, making its readership probably the largest in comic strip history. The beagle is loved for being portrayed as smarter than his master and for having a bird as his best friend.

The top ten are as follows:

1. Snoopy

2. Texas A&M’s Reveille

3. Scooby Doo

4. Eddie from the TV show “Frasier”

5. Pound Puppy toys

6. Painting “Dogs Playing Poker”

7. Song “How Much is that Doggie in the Window”

8. Georgetown’s Jack the Bulldog

9. The song “Who Let the Dogs Out”

10. Brian Griffin from the animated TV show Family Guy
