US soldier captured in Afghanistan appears on Taliban video

U.S. Marines Continue Suppression Of Insurgents

An American soldier who went missing from a small base in a rugged region in Afghanistan has been shown on a Taliban website, reports from the US say.

The unnamed soldier is shown in the 28-minute video in grey clothes and with shaved head. The private says the date is July 14th. He gives his views on the war, Islam and the morale of American soldiers, adding he was captured when he lagged behind on a patrol.

Two U.S. defense officials confirmed that the man in the video is the captured soldier.

There have been no direct negotiations with the kidnappers, according to the US military, but American forces were appealing to tribal leaders and local government officials to assist in returning the soldier.

UPDATE: The US military has identified the man shown on the video. He was named as Bowe Bergdahl, 23, from Ketchum, Idaho.
