Somali Blast at Graduation Site Kills 19
What should have been a happy moment turned sour as a male suicide bomber dressed as a woman killed 19 people at the event in Shamow Hotel at the Somali capital Mogadishu.
As of latest reports, three government ministers, two journalists, two doctors and nine students were among the dead.
Included in the fatalities were Education Minister Abdullahi Wayel, Health Minister Qamar Aden, Higher Education Minister Ibrahim Hassan Adow, journalist Mohamed Amiin Abdullah and freelance cameraman Hassan Ahmed Hagi. Abdullah and Hagi worked with Shabelle Media, a local network corresponding with CNN.
Somalia President Sharif Ahmed has shown the body in a news conference. The body sports a beard. He also showed the remains of the suicide belt and shreds of hijab – a women garment. He accused the Islamist opposition group of Al-Shabaab.
Residents near the area said that the explosion was “very deafening” and could be heard at the far ends of the city.
