A 61-year-old woman was killed today after being hit by a police motorcycle as she watched the 14th stage of the Tour de France.

French police said the spectator was struck as she tried to cross the road in Alsace in eastern France, located about 40 kilometers from the start of Stage 14 in Colmar.

Two others were injured in the incident. Both victims were transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

This is the first fatal accident to occur at the Tour de France since 2002, when a child died after being hit by a car from the publicity caravan.
