In the 4 year-old video below, you’ll see Stefani Germanotta – aka Lady Gaga, as she performs two of her original songs for an annual talent show in New York University.

At the end of her performance, one of the judges says: “Norah Jones, look out!”

Woh, I just had a whole “alternate universe” thing happen for a second. That's good though. I'd listen to that at a Starbucks.

The world doesn't need another Nora Jones… It needs a Lady Gaga.

If she continued playing piano and singing the same way, she would still be a struggling artist 'waiting for a break'. Sometimes you have to create a niche for yourself as an artist to make it.

I think Lady Gaga is doing just fine. She has an 'echo' of Madonna in her. Madonna was very similar in that her uniqueness came from being pop, but also pushing glamor.

her songwriting is all over the place, theres no structure. its obvious she does not write the songs she releases now without a producer's co-writing

you can see the gaga character in her then. she's always said she found herself a little different, a little weird, a little difficult to fit in to the norm; i think i see what she means now. no other girl would bang the piano the way she does, that's totally gaga. she doesn't belong in that long flowy evening gown; she belongs in her futuristic costumes and crazy wigs. it's really brave of her to decide to just be herself. LOVE YOU GAGA!

Wow!! This doesn't say much for us(the buying public) She is so talented. How many extremely talented artists don't make it because labels know how dumb we are. Weird sells!! Good dosen't sell!! We should hang our heads in SHAME!!!!!

…except that she pulled that banging-the-piano move directly from amanda palmer, who she's already said she's influenced by…other than that small detail.

she doesn't look or sound much like Lady Gaga until 3:30

she sounds and looks so much better here…. :( shame she had to turn all pop-junky

  • Chocolalaland said:

I think she was a much better singer and she was really pretty. You can really hear the strength of her voice and vibrato here. Whereas I find in her newer songs she doesn't really 'sing,' mostly uses Autotone and modifies her voice.

You're right – it's nothing close to Norah Jones – it's so much better. Have you listened to this girls Album? And I'm not talking about the songs on radio right now. You wouldn't believe the variation in her voice. I couldn't stand her until I heard the album.

Watching this video was like watching Anakin Skywalker before he became Darth Vader. It was absolutely pleasant to watch. It is sad that Stefani Germanotta turned herself into her new creation Lady Gaga. It makes me wonder if the old Stefani is truly dead.

  • <3gaga said:

Obviously the people on here haven't listened to anything other than bad romance or poker face…The songs they play on the radio aren't even her best she has an amazing voice.

  • SlawDogg said:

OK, this is what I am talking about! When I saw Gaga for the first time on SNL, she had reverted back to the Stefani role (who she really is) in one of her sets. I have said before, she is a talent that will eventually shed the facade and be known as a timeless entertainer. All the superficial stuff is just there to cut through the crap, and get the attention of the knuckle dragging public that cannot appreciate talent in its natural form. Kind of like people who can't drink tea without being drenched in spoons full of sugar. She loves what she does. She much reminds me of a female counterpart to Steven Tyler.

I like her as she was 4 years ago like this. much better. what happened?

  • Schm1347 said:

Man…she’s got some real talent. Too bad the shit on the radio doesn’t exhibit that. I guess the masses don’t care about talent or ability. That’s why I don’t listen to mainstream radio…

Where is this gifted young lady on this piano? What a travesy that the industrial music machine morphed her into the Joker we see today. I hope she finds her way home.

  • Rlaiassa said:

You know she understands discrimination- to be the last chosen – and then she blossoms into the lady hamlet and stands up for all people regardless of their background, race, religion and or their sexual identity. Talented- Many. Sincerely, Robert Aiassa
