2009 UEFA Super Cup: FC Barcelona vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

Powerhouse FC Barcelona take on Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk tonight in the 2009 UEFA Super Cup, an annual football game between the reigning champs of the Champions League and the Europa League.

These two clubs met in last season’s CL group stage, each recording an away victory but only Barça progressing to the first knockout round as Hirnyky dropped into the Europa. For the Spanish side, this will be the seventh time they will be playing in the Super Cup.

Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu has won the tournament before, with his Galatasaray SK side beating Vicente del Bosque’s Real Madrid 2-1 in the 2000 edition.

There’s a fascinating weave in this game as well. Shaktar centre-back Dmytro Chygrynskiy will be playing his final game with his team. His future squad—Barcelona.

Barca have struck a €25million deal and have offered the 22-year-old a five-year contract at the Camp Nou. In a recent interview, Sporting director Txiki Begiristain said: “Both Pep Guardiola and the club have been keen to sign a centre-back with certain characteristics. Chygrynskiy fits this profile.”

Game time is 8:45 p.m. CET (2:45 p.m. ET) at the Stade Louis II, Monaco.

UPDATE: After a goalless 90 minutes, Barca’s substitute winger Pedro Rodriguez combined well with Lionel Messi to net the decisive goal five minutes before the end of the match.
