“Takers” Steals Box-Office Title from “Last Exorcism”

Takers” has been declared the real box-office king this weekend after the final numbers were released on Monday, dislodging “The Last Exorcism,” which was tipped to have won the ticket-sales battle a day earlier.

Based on final numbers released by studios, Sony Screen Gems’ “Takers” grossed $20,512,304 in its first weekend, slightly better than the $20,366,613 haul of Lionsgate’s “The Last Exorcism.” Earlier estimates had “Exorcism” taking the top spot with $21.3 million while “Takers” was second with $21 million.

Last week’s box-office champ, “The Expendables,” settled for third place this time with $9.5 million while “Eat Pray Love,” with Julia Roberts in the lead, had $6,815,555 in its third weekend. “Eat Pray Love” was closely followed by “The Other Guys,” which took $6,285,712 to raise its four-week total to more than $99 million.

The spoof “Vampires Suck” plummeted to 6th place with $5.2 million while Chris Nolan’s blockbuster “Inception” added $4.8 million to its seven-week haul, which now stands at $270.5 million. The last three spots in the box-office top 10 went to “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “The Switch,” and “Piranha 3D.”

“Avatar,” which was re-released with additional scenes this week, took $4 million to raise its record domestic gross to more than $753 million.
