Teen Sailor Abby Sunderland Rescued
American teenager Abby Sunderland, who is attempting to sail around the world alone, has been found alive after her sailboat Wild Eyes encountered rough waters in the Indian Ocean on Thursday.
Sunderland, 16, triggered the emergency beacons of her boat early Thursday moments after calling her parents in Thousands Oaks, California. The distress calls had rescuers from Australia, United States, and France scrambling to reach Sunderland. After several hours of anxiety, Sunderland’s parents reported that their daughter had been found and had already established radio contact with rescuers.
“Wild Eyes is upright but her rigging is down. The weather conditions are abating. Radio communication was made and Abby reports that she is fine!” Laurence and Mariane Sunderland said in a message posted on their daughter’s blog.
Sunderland started sailing in January as she attempted to become the youngest to circumnavigate non-stop, but had to abandon the record attempt after encountering problems in April, when she was forced to stop to have Wild Eyes repaired.
