“Thor” Nails Down Box-Office Win Anew

A bunch of “Bridesmaids” were not enough to topple the mighty “Thor” from his perch atop the North American box office this weekend.

“Thor” hammered the box-office cash registers again, taking in an estimated $34.5 million to finish as the top grossing film in North America for the second-straight weekend. The film adaptation of the hammer-wielding Norse mythology god popularized by Marvel comics has now earned $119.2 million domestically since it was released in the U.S. last week.

Debuting at number two was the raunchy comedy “Bridesmaids,” which benefited from good reviews to gross an above-expectations $24.4 million. “Bridesmaids” stars Saturday Night Live regular Kristen Wiig and SNL alum Maya Rudolph. “Fast Five” snatched $19.5 million for third place and a cume of $168.8 million. Paul Bettany’s “Priest 3D” bowed at no.4 with an estimated $14.6 million.

Animated film “Rio” remained strong at no.5 with $8 million, followed by “Jumping the Broom” ($7.3 million), “Something Borrowed” ($7 million), and “Water for Elephants” ($4.1 million). “Madea’s Big Happy Family” ($2.2 million) and “Soul Surfer” ($1.8 million) rounded out the top 10.
