“Thor” Opens with $66 Million to Lead Box Office
“Thor” debuted with an estimated $66 million to hammer the competition and lead the North American box office this weekend.
The film, which stars Chris Hemsworth as the God of Thunder sent to Earth as punishment for his arrogance, dislodged last week’s top grosser, “Fast Five,” the fifth installment in “The Fast and the Furious” franchise. “Fast Five” added $32.5 million to its North America earnings, which now stands at a year’s best $140 million after only two weeks in theaters. “Fast Five” easily replaced the previous top earner, “Rango,” which has $120 million to its name.
Coming in at number three and four this weekend were two new releases both targeted at female audiences. The wedding-themed comedy “Jumping the Broom” beat studio projections by earning $13.7 million at third spot. The Kate Hudson-powered “Something Borrowed” debuted with $13.2 million for fourth at the box office. The animated film “Rio” continued its strong showing with $8.2 million at number five.
