Tiger Woods to take indefinite break
Tiger Woods Updates: After weeks of speculation, Tiger Woods has finally admitted that he’s been unfaithful to Elin Nordegren, his wife of five years, and as a result will take an “indefinite” break from professional golf to give him time sort out the mess left by his infidelity.
The past two weeks brought a flood of scrutiny to the golf superstar’s personal life, most notably allegations of multiple extramarital affairs.
In a statement posted on his website Friday, Woods said, “I am deeply aware of the disappointment and hurt that my infidelity has caused to so many people, most of all my wife and children. I want to say again to everyone that I am profoundly sorry and that I ask forgiveness. It may not be possible to repair the damage I’ve done, but I want to do my best to try.
“After much soul searching, I have decided to take an indefinite break from professional golf. I need to focus my attention on being a better husband, father, and person.”
Tiger’s decision to put his career on hold will have the most immediate effect on the PGA Tour, which already has been losing sponsorships. When he missed eight months to recover from knee surgery, television ratings for the tour dropped 50 percent.
It’s unclear whether his sponsors will permanently ditch Woods, but public relations executives are sure that the empire the golfer built on his clean image is now in a sand trap.
