“When you think of Cannes you think of world cinema. And as films have always been like dreams to me, this is a dream come true,” said the director after being chosen to lead the panel who will decide which film will get the Palme d’Or.

The other eight members and the movies competing for the awards will be announced on April.

This year’s film festival will last from May 12-23.

Burton’s films are considered to be some of the darkest and most evocative in cinematic history. These include Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands and Planet of the Apes. Despite that, he has directed films in many genres, from biography, science fiction, gothic, fantasy, animation, children’s movie and musical.

His next film to be released will be Alice in Wonderland which will again feature Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.
