Tobey Maguire in Talks to Star in ‘The Hobbit’

Like his Brothers co-star Natalie Portman, who has confirmed that she will star in the movie version of the bestselling parody novel Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Tobey Maguire is rumored to be in negotiations to take on the lead role in another much-anticipated book-to-film adaptation. This time, the book in question is none other than J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit, the prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Golden Globe-nominated actor, who will reprise his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the fourth installment in the popular superhero film series, is said to be in the running for the role of Bilbo Baggins, the heroic title character in Tolkien’s fantasy novel. Apparently, while promoting Brothers last month in New York, Maguire was asked which director he would like to collaborate with next and he answered, “Guillermo del Toro,” who is set to direct The Hobbit after The Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson opted to be involved in the project as executive producer and co-writer. Maguire also went on to say, “We may have something here in the near future.”

I think Maguire is an excellent choice for the part. Like Elijah Wood, who played Bilbo’s nephew Frodo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Maguire has the right acting chops as well as just the right build to convincingly pass for a little, adventure-loving hobbit.
