Today is Square Root Day [3/3/09]

square-root-daySquare root day is a rare holiday celebrated on dates where the day and the month are both the square root of the last two digits in the current year.

Today is March 3, 2009, (3/3/09). Mathematically we can express this date as √9 = 3, or 3² = 3 × 3 = 9.

The next square root day will be April 4, 2016 (4/4/16) and the final square root day of the century will occur on September 9, 2081. I hope we can reach that date.

In each century there will be 9 square root days.

Ron Gordon, a Redwood City, California high school teacher, first created the day for 9/9/81.

“These days are like calendar comets, you wait and wait and wait for them, then they brighten up your day–and poof–they’re gone”

He organized a contest intended to publicize the event and the prize, or course, is $339.
Aha! Next will be $4416.

Well, how should we celebrate Square root day? Go eat some square radishes!
