Travis Pastrana Attempts Rally Car Jump Record on New Year’s Eve
Travis Pastrana, a motocross champion, a rally racer and daredevil, is preparing for his New Year’s Eve 2009 Jump at Pine Avenue Pier in Long Beach, California. Using a Subaru Impreza STI, Pastrana will attempt to break the current world record for car-distance, jumping over 200 feet onto a floating barge.
The jump is for Red Bull’s annual New Year’s event, “Red Bull: New Year. No Limits.”
The current record is 171 feet set by Ken Block, Pastrana’s Subaru teammate, using a rally car in November 2006. The daredevil wants to shatter the world record by more than 100 feet, but in order to do that, he’ll have to reach 230 feet of water between the two ramps.
“If I land where the current world record is, I’m landing in the water. I’m not even getting to the barge, let alone the landing,” Pastrana said. “I don’t really have a choice there.”
Red Bull: New Year. No Limits will be televised live on ESPN/ESPN HD on Thursday, Dec. 31, immediately after the Chick-fil-A Bowl (around 11 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. PT).
