Udonis Haslem Arrested for Pot Possession
Udonis Haslem of the NBA’s Miami Heat was arrested Sunday on several charges including marijuana possession.
Haslem, who was driving his 2008 Mercedes-Benz, was stopped by the Florida Highway Patrol after he was clocked going 78 miles per hour on a 60 mph road. FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysocky said the trooper who stopped the basketball player smelled marijuana when he approached Haslem’s vehicle. After a search, the trooper was able to confiscate more than 20 grams of marijuana from Haslem and his companion.
Haslem was also charged with four counts of drug paraphernalia possession, speeding, and illegal window tinting, Wysocky said. Haslem was brought to a Miami-Dade county jail, but he was expected to be released upon posting a $9,000 bail bond, Miami-Dade Corrections spokeswoman Janelle Hall said.
It is not known whether the Heat or the NBA would impose sanctions or punishments against Haslem. The 30-year-old former University of Florida star is one of the Heat’s top big men. He was signed by the Heat in 2003 as an undrafted rookie and agreed this summer to stay in Miami the next five years for $20 million, around $14 million less than what the Dallas Mavericks and the Denver Nuggets were willing to give him.
