UEFA Champions League: Barcelona vs. Stuttgart
Reigning European champions FC Barcelona take on German side VfB Stuttgart tonight (20:45 CET) in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash.
The Spanish giants are going well in La Liga, two points clear at the summit, and won at the weekend with a 4-0 thrashing of Racing Santander. With Xavi, Daniel Alves and Zlatan Ibrahimovic all fit to play, the Blaugrana are firm favorites to overcome Stuttgart, who are ninth in the Bundesliga. However, Carles Puyol admits his team could be in trouble if they underestimate the threat posed by Die Schwaben.
Barca coach Pep Guardiola also told his men that they have to play better if they want to achieve a positive result tonight.
“We have to take another step forward if we want to be champions,” he said. “Scoring four goals against Racing has merit but it’s not enough to compete with German football.”
Stuttgart goes into this clash on the back of 6 wins in 8 games since Christian Gross replaced Markus Babbel as manager. The Germans warmed up for tonight’s Champions League encounter by winning 5-1 at Cologne. Cacau, in his first game since recovering from an injury, scored four goals.
So can Stuttgart win this game? I doubt it! But your opinion is important to us so let us know what you think by the writing on the comments section below this post.
UPDATE: Cacau gave Stuttgart a half-time lead but Ibrahimovic scored for Barca after the interval to draw 1-1 in their round-of-16 match.
