UEFA Champions League: Lyon vs. Bordeaux
It’s an all-French affair! A team from France is assured of moving into the next round of the UEFA Champions League as FC Girondins de Bordeaux will collide against Olympique Lyonnais in the quarterfinals.
It will be the first time that two French clubs have locked horns in the tournament. Lyon and Bordeaux are great rivals, and whenever they face off, both sides produce interesting and dramatic games.
Bordeaux is the only undefeated team in this year’s elite European competition and has won its last seven games. Its best performance was in 1985, when it made it to the semifinals but lost to eventual champion Juventus.
Les Girondins broke Lyon’s seven-year monopoly at the top of Ligue 1 last season and are now aiming to destroy les Gones’ dream of reaching the semifinals.
For Claude Puel and his men, their path to get here was a little harder. They were in a group with Fiorentina and Liverpool. The last round saw them take on the world’s richest club, Real Madrid, with most expecting them to lose.
Lyon has no fresh injury concerns ahead of tonight’s game, and only long-term absentees Francois Clerc and Cleber Anderson are unavailable. Bordeaux, on the other hand, are without Alou Diarra, who was sent off in the second leg of the victory over Olympiakos in the previous round.
The match kicks-off at 20:45 CET.
UPDATE: Lisandro Lopez scored twice to help Lyon beat Bordeaux 3-1 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
