UEFA Champions League: Olympique Lyon vs. Bayern Munich
Olympique Lyonnais, appearing in the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time, are the underdogs as they face four-time champions Bayern Munich (Munchen) tonight at Stade Gerland. However, Lyon boss Claude Puel has stated his side will execute a more attacking approach in the second leg against the German side to advance to the final on May 22.
Bayern, conquerors of Manchester United in the last 8, arrive in France with a slim lead thanks to their 1-0 victory at the Allianz Arena on April 21. An away goal most likely will push them to the final.
Louis van Gaal’s task is defending a slight advantage against an vehement squad without the services of suspended winger Franck Ribery and midfielder Anatoliy Tymoschuk, who is sick. In a recent interview, the 58-year-old Dutch tactician said: “We’ve got to forget about the first leg. This is a different game.”
The Bavarians could win titles on two other tournaments as they head the Bundesliga and have a date with Werder Bremen in the German Cup final, but winning Europe’s elite club competition is their primary goal.
Les Gones, on the other hand, have no suspension worries but midfielder Jean Makoun and defenders Jean-Alain Boumsong and Mathieu Bodmer are sidelined with injuries.
The game starts at 20:45 CET (2:45 p.m. ET). The FC Barcelona vs. Inter Milan match kicks-off tomorrow.
UPDATE: Ivica Olic scored a hat-trick as Bayern beat Lyon 3-0 (4-0 aggregate) to qualify for the Champions League final for the first time since they last won the competition in 2001.
