UFC 137 Results: Nick Diaz Beats BJ Penn

Nick Diaz gave himself another shot at becoming the UFC welterweight champion with an impressive victory over BJ Penn in the main event of UFC 137 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Diaz reworked Penn’s face for three rounds to earn a convincing unanimous decision win. The former Strikeforce welterweight champion landed solid shots to the face while also occasionally battering Penn’s body for a triumphant return to the UFC. The judges gave the fight to Diaz via scores of 29-28, 29-28, 29-27. Penn, whose face was a bloody mess after the fight, hinted at retirement during a post-fight interview. “This probably the last time you will ever see me in here,” Penn said. “I’ve got a daughter at home, another on the way. I don’t want to go home looking like this; I’m done.”

In other UFC 137 results, Cheick Kongo dominated Matt Mitrione for a 30-27, 30-28, 29-28 unanimous-decision victory. Mitrione suffered his first lost as an MMA professional fighter while Kongo notched his 17th win in 25 matches. Roy Nelson stopped Mirko Filipovic with a barrage of punches at 1:30 of Round 3.
