US Open 2010: Rafael Nadal Advances to Quarters

Rafael Nadal maintained his record of not dropping a set at the US Open this year, as the Spanish top seed defeated 23rd seed Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, in a late night match that concluded the Day 9 action at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Nadal, who has won all 61 of his service games so far, finished the night with 34 winners against only 14 unforced errors. The world no.1 also saved four break points to run his total at this year’s US Open to 13. Up next for Nadal is 8th seed Fernando Verdasco, who slipped by no.10 David Ferrer in a five-set thriller, 5-7, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.

Meanwhile, Stanislas Wawrinka extended the American men’s singles title drought for another year with a five set victory over Sam Querrey, 7-6, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Wawrinka, the 25th seed, will face no.12 Mikhail Youzhny in the quarterfinals. The other men’s singles quarterfinals pairings will feature Gail Monfils against Novak Djokovic, and second-seed Roger Federer facing off with fifth seed Robin Soderling.
