US Open 2009: Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Juan Carlos Ferrero

Argentine tennis ace Juan Martin Del Potro takes on Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain today in the fourth round of the U.S. Open at Louis Armstrong Stadium. The two have not faced each other since 2006.

The sixth seed defeated Daniel Koellerer 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 on Sunday to advance to this round. Like in his match against the Australian, Del Potro is likely to continue with his boom-or-bust style against Ferrero.

The 24th seed Spaniard is a former U.S. Open finalist and once the top-ranked player in the world. But that was in six years ago, when del Potro was still just entering his early teens.

This match is scheduled to take place sometime after 1:00 p.m. ET, at which time the men’s doubles – quarterfinals would have concluded.

UPDATE: Del Potro blew past Ferrero 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 at the Billie Jean King USTA National Tennis Center. He will play Marin Cilic of Croatia in the final eight.
