US Open 2009: Roger Federer vs. Novak Djokovic

Serbia’s Novak Djokovic, who is seeded No. 4, will meet world No. 1 Roger Federer this afternoon in the semifinals of the 2009 U.S. Open.

The Swiss tennis ace ousted Sweden’s Robin Soderling Wednesday night to reach this round, while Djokovic defeated Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the quarterfinals.

Federer has reached his 22nd consecutive semifinal at a major tournament. Two more wins, and the man from Basel will become the first player since Bill Tilden to win six consecutive US Open titles.

Djokovic and Federer have met three times already this year, with the Serbian winning their encounters in Miami and Rome, but Federer won their most recent meeting, in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters 1000 less than a month ago.

This match is scheduled to take place around 4:30 p.m. ET at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE: Federer advanced to the U.S. Open men’s final by defeating Djokovic 7-6 (3), 7-5, 7-5. The world No.1 is just one win away from his sixth straight U.S. Open crown.
