Sixth seed Juan Martin del Potro will have the chance to boost his status as the coming man in world tennis today when he faces world No.1 Roger Federer in the final of the U.S. Open.

Del Potro, 20, is the first Argentine to reach the championship round of this tournament since Guillermo Vilas won the crown in 1977. His strong right-handed serve and robust groundstrokes, pushed third seed Rafael Nadal all over the court for 2 hours, never letting the Spaniard get comfy.

Federer on the other hand is one victory away from a sixth straight U.S. Open trophy after defeating Novak Djokovic of Serbia 7-6, 7-5, 7-5 in their semi-final clash yesterday.

The 28-year-old Swiss maestro has beaten Del Potro in all six career meetings. The two met at this year’s French Open semi-final and Federer escaped with a five-set win en route to the title.

However, the 6-foot-6 Argentine has been one of the most dominant tennis players during the hardcourt season. Roger is the clear favorite but the odds definitely reflect a degree of confidence in Del Potro’s improved game.

This match is scheduled to take place around 4:00 p.m. ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE: Juan Martin del Potro twice came from a set down to beat Roger Federer 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 at Flushing Meadows. Federer had a chance to seal a result in the fourth set but was beaten in the tiebreak.
