US Open 2009 Final: Caroline Wozniacki vs. Kim Clijsters

Caroline Wozniacki, the ninth-seeded teen sensation from Denmark, will meet former world No.1 Kim Clijsters tonight at the U.S. Open women’s final.

Clijsters, who is projected to rise to around No.30 should she fall in this match and into the Top 20 with a title, is trying to become the first wildcard in history to win a Grand Slam singles trophy.

Last night, the 26-year-old mum pushed Serena Williams to the brink of defeat before the three-time U.S. Open champ lost her cool, scolded a lineswoman on match point, and was defaulted.

No player ranked outside the Top 10, let alone a wildcard, has ever won the tournament, and only two outside the Top 5 have ever claimed the title. Well, those records are set to be smashed this evening.

And yes, I’m rooting for Kim.

This match is scheduled to take place around 9:00 p.m. ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE: Kim Clijsters became the first unseeded woman to win the U.S. Open with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Caroline Wozniacki.
