US Open 2009: Rafael Nadal vs. Nicolas Almagro


Third seed Rafael Nadal is all set for his encounter against compatriot Nicolas Almagro at Arthur Ashe Stadium for the third round of the U.S. Open.

Nadal advanced after outclassing German veteran Nicolas Kiefer 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, while Almagro was put to the test in his second round match against Robby Ginepri.

The 23-year-old tennis ace does hold a 3-0 head to head lead over the 32nd seed, with every match being contested on clay courts. In those clashes, Rafa has won every single set (7-0 set record).

This game is scheduled to take place sometime after 12:30 p.m. ET, at which time the Daniela Hantuchova vs. Serena Williams match would have concluded.

UPDATE: Rafa advanced to the final 16 by defeating fellow Spaniard Nicolas Almagro 7-5, 6-4, 6-4. The World No.3 will face the winner of a later match between Gael Monfils of France and Argentina’s Jose Acasuso.
