US Open 2009: Rafael Nadal vs. Fernando Gonzalez

Eleventh seed Fernando Gonzalez will play former world No.1 Rafael Nadal in a quarterfinal clash at the U.S. Open tonight, which is likely to turn into a battle of the forehands.

Their head to head record is 6-3 to Rafa but Gonzalez has lost their last five meetings since he thrashed the Spaniard en route to the Australian Open final in 2007.

The 29-year-old from Chile dispatched a tough opponent in Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to earn a trip to this round, while Nadal showed great reserves of strength to beat France’s Gael Monfils.

Rafa moved well against Monfils, covering the court during their many extended exchanges. And after an incredible display of power, tennis experts are starting to believe that someone might be able to defy Roger Federer’s bid for a sixth straight U.S. Open crown.

Game time is 7:00 p.m. ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE 1: The game was suspended in the third set last night as rain disrupted the tournament for the first time in 11 days of play. They’ll try to resume today their quarterfinal match with Nadal leading 7-6, 6-6.

UPDATE 2: Nadal has reached the U.S. Open semifinals for the second year in a row by finishing a rain-interrupted victory over Gonzalez. The Spaniard needed just 32 minutes to complete a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 6-0 win over the 11th seed from Chile.
