US Open 2009: Maria Sharapova vs. Melanie Oudin

After a stunning victory against fourth seeded Elena Dementieva, American teen Melanie Oudin will now face another tough Russian—Maria Sharapova—at the third round of the U.S. Open this afternoon.

Dementieva was sent off 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 by the 17-year-old world number 70 to become the first big-name casualty of the tournament.

Sharapova and Oudin have never played one another so there is no head to head matchup history to consider.

Oudin is the third-ranked American behind the Williams sisters. She first drew major notice this summer at SW19, where she upset former world No. 1 Jelena Jankovic en route to a fourth-round showing.

Sharapova, the 2006 U.S. Open champion who missed last year with a shoulder injury, has the glitz and glamour that the crowd love.

Game time is 1:00 p.m. ET at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

UPDATE: Oudin extended her run into the fourth round of the tournament with a 3-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Sharapova. Oudin will now play another Russian, 13th seed Nadia Petrova, for a place in the quarterfinals.
