U.S. Senate Votes On Health Care Reform Bill

The U.S. Senate approved an $871 billion health care reform bill Thursday morning, a landmark moment for White House-led efforts to extend insurance coverage to tens of millions of Americans.

“Today I cast one of the defining votes of my Senate career,” said Sen. Tom Harkin (D) of Iowa, chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

The vote was a victory for President Barack Obama, who made the issue his top domestic priority despite months of partisan wrangling.

The bill moved through the Senate by a wide 60-39 margin. Every member of the Democratic conclave and two independents supported the measure; every Republican opposed it, saying it would raise taxes, widen the federal deficit and hurt private companies.
