Vitali Klitschko Punishes Shannon Briggs to Retain Title

Vitali Klitschko could not produce the knockout that he was expected to deliver but easily scored a unanimous decision over a surprisingly durable Shannon Briggs to retain his WBC heavyweight title in Germany over the weekend.

Klitschko dominated the match from start to finish and landed several hard shots to secure the lopsided decision, with the judges giving the Ukrainian champion a shutout, 120-107, 120-107, and 120-105. Despite receiving a lot of punishment, Briggs was not knocked down even once, a durability that had Klitschko praising his American opponent. “I could not believe he was still standing after taking so many punches,” said Klitschko, who improved to 41-2. Briggs, on the other hand, dropped to 51-6-1.

After the fight, Briggs said Klitschko was the best he had faced in his long career. “I’ve fought George Foreman, I’ve fought Lennox Lewis, and Vitali’s the best,” said Briggs. And just how good Klitschko really was? So good as to land Briggs in the hospital.

ESPN reported that Briggs was brought to the Eppendorf University Hospital and was treated for a broken orbital bone and a broken nose.
