It’s just minutes until Super Bowl 44 kicks off with the exciting prospect of professional football’s best offensive teams battling it out.

The Saints have been established as the sentimental favorites heading into this game because of all the challenges that the people of New Orleans have faced over the years, including the devastation of Katrina.

It took them 20 years to get a winning record and a spot in the playoffs but it’s all worth the wait, because this time, they have won the hearts of most neutrals. Saints fever was visible all along the parade routes as legions of revelers wore jerseys and other items in black and gold while watching marching bands and floats.

And not everyone in Indianapolis is wearing blue. Many Purdue fans are rooting for the Saints because Drew Brees attended the university.

However, we all know that Indianapolis is the better team. The Colts have been the most consistent squad all season and Peyton Manning is playing maybe the best football of his career. Their running game is not what the team is known for but can be guaranteed for a couple of big plays.

US President Barack Obama named the Colts as Super Bowl favorites, but said he had a “soft spot” for the Saints for their role as a beacon of hope for a city that is still struggling to overcome the terrible aftermath of Katrina.

UPDATE: The city of New Orleans exploded with joy Sunday evening as the Saints upset the Colts, 31-17 to win their first Super Bowl trophy. Drew Brees, who was named MVP, tied a Super Bowl record with 32 completions, hitting 32 of 39 for 288 yards and two touchdowns.
