Watch the 2011 French Open Live Online [Live Stream + Preview]
French Open 2011 Preview: The 2011 French Open kicks-off Sunday (May 22) and a lot of tennis fans and pundits believe that Rafael Nadal is still in the driving seat for a sixth Roland Garros crown. However, Nadal has lost his last four meetings with Novak Djokovic, which has put the Spanish world number one firmly on the back foot.
Djokovic is undefeated in 37 games, and if the Serb reaches this year’s final, he will overtake Rafa for top spot in the ATP rankings. Novak, currently the world number two, has never made the final of the French Open before but back-to-back wins over Nadal on the clay courts of Rome and Madrid have boosted his confidence coming into this tournament.
And what about Roger Federer? Well, he has dropped to 3rd in the rankings, and has begun showing inconsistency in some of his games but the Swiss Maestro is absolutely confident about repeating his triumph in 2009. Federer will be 30 in August and is desperate to prove that he is still a threat at Grand Slam tennis.
Britain’s Andy Murray is also a legitimate contender, although he’s never made it past the quarters at Roland Garros. Eleventh-ranked Andy Roddick, meanwhile, has pulled out of the tournament because of a shoulder problem. With Roddick out and no other credible American contenders in, it appears as if the U.S. men’s drought of 29 consecutive majors without a title will reach 30.
With Justin Henin, Elena Dementieva and the Williams sisters out, the women’s side is wide open. World number one Caroline Wozniacki leads the pack, but seventh-seed Maria Sharapova has suddenly become one of the favorites. The 24-year-old from Russia last won a major at the 2008 Australian Open but she has been gradually climbing back up for her quest to complete the career Grand Slam. And of course, don’t forget Kim Clijsters, Victoria Azarenka, Francesca Schiavone and Li Na.
