Grammy Awards 2011 Preview: Tonight the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be live from the Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles, with Eminem leading the way with 10 nominations. The ceremony will mark the major comeback of the 38-year-old rapper as a musical powerhouse after years of battling addiction to prescription drugs.

Eminem has reportedly said he expects to be completely ignored despite a handful of nods, but pundits have him as the clear favorite to win the Album of the Year trophy. Recovery, the rapper’s seventh studio album, is 2010’s biggest selling album in the United States. It debuted at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 741,000 copies in its first week.

Bruno Mars received seven nominations, while Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, and Lady Gaga each earned six nods. Drake, Mumford & Sons, Florence and the Machine, Justin Bieber and jazz bassist/singer Esperanza Spalding are nominated for best new artist. The cast of Glee, meanwhile, is nominated for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals for Don’t Stop Believin’.

Last year was Taylor Swift’s big year as she took home four Grammys, including Album of the Year for Fearless. The 21-year-old singer-songwriter, who has sold more than 16 million albums worldwide, is in the midst of a world tour, and she kicked it off with a sold-out show at Singapore’s Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

The real winners and losers this evening, however, will be determined during the performances. Eminem, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Drake, Arcade Fire, Christina Aguilera, Muse, Usher, Bob Dylan and Bruno Mars are among the stars who will be taking the stage. Mick Jagger and Barbra Streisand, the recipient of the MusiCares Person of the Year award, will also make vocal contributions. And with Katy Perry performing her current hit Firework, special effects from the arena should literally be explosive.

A special tribute will also be given for Aretha Franklin. Among those to honor the legendary Queen of Soul will be Yolanda Adams, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Martina McBride and Florence Welch. Franklin, 68, made her first public appearance since undergoing surgery when she turned out to watch the Miami Heat-Detroit Pistons match Friday night with Jesse Jackson.
