WATCH: USA vs. Ghana Live Stream [World Cup]
Fortunately for USA, their next opponent has to be the weakest team in this stage. However, the Black Stars knocked the Yanks out of the 2006 World Cup in Germany with a 2-1 triumph in the group stage, and they will have the chance to end the American dream once again.
“That was not a good day for me or for the team,” USA midfielder Landon Donovan told reporters. “What I remember most, personally, is my tentativeness and the immediate feeling afterward, the finality of it and how disappointing that was.”
The Ghanaians are still waiting to score their first World Cup 2010 goal from open play. Their two goals in the group stage, a hard fought win over Serbia followed by a stalemate with Australia, were both from penalties. Another problem is the absence of their star player Michael Essien. The 27-year-old Chelsea midfielder was a towering figure on Ghana’s 2006 squad but is missing this year’s tournament because of injury.
This is the first that the World Cup has been held in Africa but most of the teams from this continent have been greatly disappointing. All five South American teams made the last 16. Two North American teams survived. South Korea and Japan made surprising runs. As the only African team to advance to this phase, Ghana will likely be embraced as such by the South African fans. What remains to be seen is whether the Black Stars will find that expectation to be an awakening or a burden.
The match kicks-off at 20:30 CET (2:30 p.m. ET).
