Whale Crashes Sailing Party

A southern right whale crash-landed on the boat of South African sailing instructors in the waters off Cape Town last Sunday.

Sailing instructors Paloma Werner and Ralph Mothes said they first saw the 33-foot, 40-ton whale about 11 yards or so from them. However, lack of wind made it hard for them to prevent the sea creature from leaping and crashing into their vessel. This crash broke its mast but caused no other major damage.

According to a marine mammal expert, the whale suffered no major injuries, apart from bruising and the loss of a bit of skin and blubber.

Meanwhile, Department of Environmental Affairs officials are looking into allegations that the sailing instructors may have approached the whale illegally.
