Wimbledon 2011: Watch Sharapova vs. Kvitova Live Online [Live Stream, Preview]
Sharapova vs. Kvitova Preview: Maria Sharapova, known as one of the loudest grunters in the world of tennis, will be playing in her first Grand Slam final since she won the 2008 Australian Open. The 24-year-old Russian hottie, who captured a Wimbledon title back in 2004, will face Petra Kvitova on Saturday (July 2) for the women’s singles crown.
Kvitova, the eighth seed from the Czech Republic, is in this stage having defeated Belarus’ Victoria Azarenka, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, on Thursday. The 21-year-old unleashed nine aces and broke Azarenka four times to reach her first ever Major final. Sharapova, on the other hand, defeated wild card Sabine Lisicki without much trouble despite 13 double faults. The former World No. 1 survived a shaky first set before dominating the second en route to a 6-4, 6-3 win over the German ace.
“It’s a great feeling,” Sharapova said after beating Lisicki in their semi-final match. “As I’ve said, I was pretty realistic. I hadn’t been past the fourth round in a few years. So to be at this stage, I’m just thrilled to have the opportunity to go for it.”
Who do you think will win? Kvitova is the first left-handed woman to reach a Grand Slam final since Monica Seles at the 1998 French Open. Sharapova will be playing in her fifth Grand Slam final; Kvitova in her first. The Russian seeks her 24th career title; the Czech her fifth. Here’s Greg Garber and Pam Shriver discussing the highly anticipated match-up:
