Wimbledon 2011: Wozniacki, Williams Sisters Crash Out
Caroline Wozniacki will have to be contented with being world no.1 for now as the Danish tennis star lost in the fourth round at Wimbledon 2011 on Monday in another early exit in a Grand Slam. Wozniacki squandered a one-set lead to lose to Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova, 6-1, 6-7, 5-7.
Also going Wozniacki’s way were sisters Serena and Venus Williams, who both lost to lower ranked opponents. Defending champion Serena, who recently returned after several health problems caused her to miss almost a year of competitive tennis, lost in straight-sets to ninth seed Marion Bartoli, 3-6, 6-7. Five-time champion Venus could not find her stride against Tsvetana Pironkova, losing in a seemingly lopsided match, 2-6 3-6.
Wozniacki’s and the Williams sisters’s elimination means that fourth-seeded Victoria Azarenka and fifth seed Maria Sharapova are now the two highest seeds remaining in the women’s draw. Azarenka of Belarus easily disposed of Russia’s Nadia Petrova, 6-2 6-2, while, Sharapova advanced after defeating China’s Peng Shuai, 6-4, 6-2.
