World Cup 2010 Qualifier: USA vs. Trinidad and Tobago
The United States men’s national soccer team will face Trinidad and Tobago tonight for a 2010 World Cup qualifying match.
The Yanks have already beaten the Caribbean side once this year, crushing the Soca Warriors 3-0 on April 1st in Nashville. But tonight Team USA won’t have the home field advantage, and that’s a big factor.
A U.S. tie here just won’t cut it. The Americans must claim victory in Port of Spain to clinch a spot in South Africa because Mexico’s amazing win at Costa Rica on Saturday made a close four-team race for three automatic WC berths even tighter.
If El Salvador loses at home today against Costa Rica, the Yanks will have secured, at the very least, a playoff spot because it would be guaranteed finishing no lower than fourth in its six-nation round-robin.
Only the top three teams qualify directly for the World Cup, while the fourth placer will face off against South America’s fifth-place squad.
Game time is 7:00 p.m. ET.
UPDATE: Ricardo Clark’s goal in the 62nd minute lifted Team USA to a 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago. The Americans need one more win to guarantee reaching their sixth straight World Cup.
