World Cup 2010 Qualifying: Portugal vs. Hungary

Portugal vs. Hungary is probably the second biggest World Cup qualifying match this weekend in Europe after the Russia vs. Germany clash.

The Seleccao, who are third in Group One, have to win this game or Cristiano Ronaldo will not be going to a second World Cup, at least not until Brazil 2014.

The FIFA world player of the year hasn’t scored in an official game for Portugal since the 2008 European Championship, and the team needs him to regain his touch.

Unfortunately winning this fixture is not enough for the boys in red and green. They must also pray that Sweden do not defeat or draw 2-2 with Denmark. A result of this nature would see the Seleccao miss out on their first major tournament since World Cup 1998.

The Hungarians are currently sharing the third spot with Portugal, but their worse goal record means they are behind Carlos Queiroz’s side in the table.

The match kicks-off at 20:45 at the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon.

UPDATE: Simao Sabrosa struck twice and Liedson added another as Portugal beat Hungary 3-0. Simao gave Portugal the lead in the 18th minute, but Ronaldo went off nine minutes later with a recurrence of an injury to his right ankle.
