American Idol: Jasmine, Jorge first of top 13 to go

Wednesday’s episode began with the announcement of a new twist in the structure of American Idol. It’s called “The Judges Save.” The judges will have the power to save one contestant from being eliminated until the top five finalists are chosen. Their decision must be unanimous. But, they can use it only once. The week the judges use it, nobody goes home, but two contenders will be sent packing the next week.

I imagine that a lot of Idol enthusiasts will go nuts about this change. Yes, it takes some power out of the voters’ hands, but I don’t see any problem with that. More than anything else, the show is a singing competition…not just a race for popularity.

16-year-old Jasmine Murray and Latino contestant Jorge Nunez were both eliminated. Both Jasmine and Jorge were criticized for their performances on Tuesday’s Michael Jackson Night. Jasmine, who sang “I’ll Be There,” pleased the judges with her vocal prowess but disappointed them with her lack of character. Meanwhile, Jorge was slammed for his boring song choice: “Never Can Say Goodbye.” The pair received the lowest viewer votes and the panel decided to save their veto for later.

I wasn’t surprised that Jorge or Jasmine would be dismissed. Jorge’s a good karaoke singer at best, and Jasmine lacks the personality and the skill to compete at this level.

Every week the results show will feature a former Idol. This week, it’s Kelly Clarkson. After her performance of “My Life Would Suck Without You,” you may have observed that she has gained some weight. Is Kelly Clarkson pregnant?

I don’t think so. She just spoke recently with Us Weekly and said she would not be sporting a baby bump anytime soon.

“I mean, I love being an aunt to my niece and nephew,” she said. “And I used to want to, like, adopt 10 kids — because I had friends who were adopted, and I thought that was the coolest thing, to be chosen. But…my job is too selfish.”
