Teresa Lewis, Virginia Convict, Set for Execution

One of the U.S. states with the highest execution rates is set to execute a woman for the first time in nearly a century.

With the U.S. Supreme Court and Gov. Bob McDonnell refusing to intervene, the state of Virginia is set to administer the lethal injection to Teresa Lewis, a Pittsylvania County native who was convicted of getting hired guns to kill his husband and stepson. Lewis is scheduled to be executed at 9p.m. on Thursday at the Greensville Correctional Center in Jarratt. She will be the first woman to be executed in Virginia since 1912.

Lewis, 41, was found guilty of ordering the killing of his husband and stepson in exchange for sex, cash, and a share of insurance benefits she was due to receive. The killing was executed by Rodney Fuller and Matthew Shallenberger on October 30, 2002, at the victims’ Pittsylvania County home. Fuller and Shallenberger were both sentenced to life in prison, but Lewis was meted the death penalty for being the mastermind behind the heinous crime.
