African Cup of Nations: Algeria vs. Malawi
Algeria vs. Malawi: The Algerian national football team will face Malawi today for the Group A match of the 2010 African Cup of Nations.
This fixture is of great significance for the Desert Foxes who have come back to the international scene after failing to make it to the last two editions of the ANC in Egypt and Ghana.
Rabah Saadane’s men come into this competition in great form, having secured their spot at the World Cup with an inspiring 1-0 victory over continental superpower Egypt.
Algeria’s smooth passing game is likely to be too much for Malawi, the weakest team in the tournament, so expect the Greens to dominate possession. However, a friendly win over Mozambique and draws to the Pharaohs and Ghana suggest that that the Flames will be not be an easy team to beat in Angola.
The match kicks-off at 8:45 a.m. ET (14:45 CET) at the Estádio 11 de Novembro in Luanda.
Meanwhile goalkeeper Lounes Gaouaoui is out of the ANC finals after suffering appendicitis. The 32-year-old Algerian goalkeeper will be replaced by Nassim Ousserir, who played only once for the Desert Foxes in the past six years.
UPDATE: Goals from Russel Mwafulirwa, Elvis Kafoteka and Davie Banda gave Malawi a 3-0 win over Algeria—the first major upset of the 2010 African Nations Cup.
