Archie Comics: Riverdale gets its first openly gay character
I ‘m not an Archie Comics buff but those avid readers of the long-running comic book series we’ll notice a new fellow in the coming issues.
Kevin Keller, Riverdale’s first openly gay character, is set to join Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Reggie Mantle and Jughead Jones at Pop’s Chocklit Shoppe in September.
Kevin will be introduced in Veronica No. 202 in a story titled, “Isn’t it Bromantic?” The storyline for the issue introduces Kevin as a romantic interest of the fashionable brunette, who doesn’t understand why he withstands her flirtations.
“In the last year or two, we’ve been introducing a lot of new characters: Diverse characters, characters with different ethnicities. With trying to be diverse, we wanted to have everybody at the table,” said cartoonist Dan Parent. “We knew at some point we wanted to introduce a gay character, and when I came up with the story idea, we felt it worked in context with this story.”
It’s uncertain whether Kevin’s debut will be temporary or whether the hunky new kid will be a permanent fixture in the Riverdale universe.
