Australian Open 2011: Nadal Reaches Quarterfinals
Rafael Nadal continued to sweep through the competition at the 2011 Australian Open, crushing 15th seed Marin Cilic in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, 6-3, on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals and stay on track to becoming the first man to hold all four Grand Slams at once since Australian legend Rod Laver did the trick in 1969.
The top-seeded Nadal, who has yet to lose a set in this tournament this year, will next take on seventh-seeded and fellow Spaniard David Ferrer, who rallied to beat qualifier Milos Raonic of Canada, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Meanwhile, fourth seed Robin Soderling became the highest-ranked player to crash out in the fourth round after the Swedish star lost to unseeded Ukrainian Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-1, 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 2-6. Dolgopolov will face British hope Andy Murray in the quarterfinals.
The other quarterfinal matches will feature second seed Roger Federer against fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka and third seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia versus sixth seed Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic.
