Beckham sets record with 109th cap

David Beckham surpassed Bobby Moore‘s outfield appearance record for England with his 109th cap in the 4-0 exhibition victory against Slovakia at Wembley on Saturday.

The 33-year-old midfielder also became his country’s second-most capped player of all time with only goalkeeper Peter Shilton, on 125, making more appearances for England.

Beckham, who made his international debut in 1996, marked the achievement by supplying the cross for Wayne Rooney‘s second-half header after Emile Heskey had given England an early lead. Frank Lampard added a third goal in the final minutes before Rooney grabbed his second.

The former England captain has stretched his international career by joining AC Milan on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy. He’ll return to Major League Soccer at the end in June, and then will go back to Italy in November.

Beckham is now hoping to start Wednesday’s World Cup qualifier against Ukraine.
