Chuck Daly, 1930-2009
Former Detroit Pistons head coach Chuck Daly, who led the ‘Bad Boys’ to a pair of NBA titles, died Saturday morning at his home in Jupiter, Florida. He was 78 years old.
The Hall of Fame basketball coach, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March, passed away with his family by his side. Funeral arrangements are pending.
In nine seasons with Detroit, Daly left his mark as the winningest coach in franchise history with a record of 467-271. He guided the Pistons to back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990. He also was the coach of the 1992 gold medal-winning US Olympic squad dubbed the “Dream Team.”
Daly left the Pistons following the 1992 season and coached two seasons each with the New Jersey Nets and the Orlando Magic, making the playoffs three times before he retired.
