CONCACAF Gold Cup 2009: Canada vs. Jamaica
From July 3 to 26 in 13 cities across the United States, 12 countries from all over North and Central America and the Caribbean will compete in the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Canada and Jamaica will square off at Home Depot Center in Carson, California tonight to open this year’s edition of the tournament. This will be Canada’s first meaningful match since being eliminated from contention for the World Cup by Jamaica, 3-0 almost a year ago.
Canada has a pretty good line up. Defender Paul Stalteri, who plays for Bundesliga’s Borussia Monchengladbach, will serve as captain. Joining Stalteri are midfielder Julian de Guzman of La Liga’s Deportivo La Coruna, former Toronto FC goalkeeper Greg Sutton and other talented young players.
The Jamaicans, who were boosted by an improved FIFA World Ranking , will try to better their 1993 third-placed finish, having rostered a number of players with overseas experience. Jamaica is the dangerous team in Group A. They have not lost since last September which means a 13 match unbeaten streak.
The game starts at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
UPDATE: Ali Gerba scored in the 75th minute to lift Canada to a 1-0 win over Jamaica in the opening match of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. It was Gerba’s fifth career Gold Cup goal, tying Carlo Corazzin for the national record.
