Corazon Aquino, former president of the Philippines, dies at 76

Former Philippine President Corazon “Cory” Aquino has died of cardiac arrest after battling colon cancer for more than a year. She was 76.

Aquino, icon of people power in the Philippines and around the world, passed away at 3:18 a.m. Saturday (local time), her son, Senator Benigno Aquino III, said.

Supporters have been holding daily prayers for the former president in churches throughout the nation for a month. She never left the hospital, as her deteriorating condition sparked a wave of emotion in the country and prompted the prevalent appearance of yellow ribbons.

Aquino was president from 1986 to 1992 and will be best remembered as the woman who deposed Ferdinand Marcos .

The Aquino family members said they will be announcing further details of her wake.
